What Are the Benefits of AHCC?

WHAT IS AHCC? AHCC, or active hexose correlated compound, is a group of natural ingredients extracted from mushrooms, fungus.

AHCC helps strengthen your immune system and may help treat some cancer-related symptoms. Today, AHCC is used for cancer and liver damage. AHCC was developed in 1980s, in the labs of Japanese technology company Chemical Up Amino, in collaboration with Tokyo University scientists.
Human and pre-clinical studies have shown, AHCC increases the number and/or activity of Natural Killer (NK) cells, dendritic cells and cytokines, which help the body fight off infections and block tumor growth.

After reviewing hundreds of fungi strains, unique strains of Shitaka fungi were identified as having the highest ability to activate natural killing cells (NK).

The component was called AHCC - Active Compound Correlated Hexose, and it has become the number one dietary supplement in Japan designed for the immune system. It is used in a variety of medical conditions, including immune support, antiviral protection, liver protection, and the reduction of conventional cancer treatment side effects.

AHCC helps support the immune system by increasing the number of cells essential for the immune response, claim Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

The amount of immune-based cells increased in volunteers after taking 3 grams of AHCC for 4 weeks, by study published in “Nutrition and Cancer” in 2008.

Another study from January 2013 in “Nutrition Research” found, taking AHCC supplements after getting a flu vaccine improved the number of protective antibodies produced.

A group of patients with liver cancer after taking AHCC for 3 months have seen improvement in general health. This study, reported in March 2006 in the “Asian Pacific Journal of Allergy and Immunology,” note, AHCC may prolong the survival of patients with advanced liver cancer. Chemotherapy used to treat breast cancer may weaken the immune system.

A study published online in July 2013 in the “Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine” reported that AHCC reduced the occurrence and severity of this side effect.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, published at October 28, 2014 that Mushroom extract, AHCC, can be helpful in treating HPV, human papillomavirus, according to a pilot clinical trial at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School.

The researchers claim, AHCC appears to be effective for the eradication of human papillomavirus (HPV). Ten HPV-positive women were treated orally with the extract, AHCC (active hexose correlated compound) once daily for up to six months. Five achieved a negative HPV test result -- three with confirmed eradication after stopping AHCC -- with the remaining two responders continuing on the study.

The results were presented at the 11th International Conference of the Society for Integrative Oncology in Houston today by principal investigator Judith A. Smith, Pharm.D., associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the UTHealth Medical School.

Currently, there is no effective medicine or supplement to treat HPV, which is associated with more than 99 percent of cervical cancer cases. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claim that several other cancers are related to HPV, including 95 percent of anal cancer, 60 percent of oropharyngeal, 65 percent of vaginal cancer, 50 percent of vulvar cancer, and 35 percent of penile cancer.

AHCC and Cancer
In-Human Studies
Studies in healthy volunteers suggest that even high doses of AHCC administered for 14 days are well-tolerated and do not cause laboratory abnormalities, and may increase the number and function of dendritic cells.
