Nobody likes being blinded when riding or driving at night. Most bike lights, even those costing hundreds of dollars, have symmetrical beams which shine equal amounts of light above and below the device. This results in significant light wasted by shining far above where the rider needs to see. Also, the glare can disorient oncoming traffic.
Most dynamo lights conform to strict standards which require a horizontal beam cutoff, but few single-piece battery-powered lights do, especially those costing less than several hundred dollars. Cycle Torch's new Shark 500 light seeks to change that, introducing a low-cost light with a horizontal beam cutoff to prevent distracting other road users.
The Shark comes in a simple but stylish box. Open it up and you find neatly packaged in foam casing bike torch. In fact, you actually get 2 lights – Cycling Torch throw in a rear light to give you a bit more for your money. In the box you'll find 3 attachment straps of different lengths, and 2 USB charging cables. No instruction manual there, but you can download it online.
For a low-cost bike light, the Shark is pretty stylish. It's a little on the large size. The front end is unusual for a bike light in that the plastic casing extends over the light itself.
The Shark 500 is an IP65 water resistance rating. This is defined as “dust tight” and protected against water projected from a nozzle.
The USB charging point can be the weak point here – it has a thin rubber cap to seal it from the moisture and dust.
Both the main torch and the rear light are charged via USB. They charge quickly, the main light back to full power in around four hours. The power button on the Shark glows red when charging and switches to blue when fully charged. The rear light glows green when fully charged.
By pressing and holding the power button, you can find out how much charge the torch has left. 10 flashes indicate 100 percent charge, 9 flashes indicate 90 percent charge, and so on.
The Cycle Torch Shark 500 is a USB rechargeable set of lights (head and tail), that emits 500 lumens of light on the high setting.
The Cycle Torch Shark 500 has 4 lighting modes, and runs up to 30 hours on the flash setting.
This light has most of the features that other higher priced light do including four different working modes:
- High - 500 Lumens - 1.5 Hours
- Medium - 250 Lumens - 3 Hours
- Low - 50 Lumens - 15 Hours
- Flash - 30+ hours
PROS

Illuminates the road very well at night
The Cycle Torch is so bright that you might even be concerned about blinding passing pedestrians. It emits 500 lumens on the highest setting. The beam is well angled, so that you can both see in front and to the sides as you're riding, Letting light out on the sides also lets drivers see you better.
Can be used to increase visibility during the day
The Cycle Torch has a flash/daylight mode, which is useful for increasing visibility during the day. The light emits 500 lumens on the flash setting, which makes it so bright that it almost feels like a strobe light.
Excellent customer service
The customer service are Cycle Torch are very forthcoming and friendly. In case of any problems, they do usually send replacements and help in any way they can to ensure that every customer is satisfied.
Fits handlebars of any thickness
This light comes with 3 rubber mounts in different sizes, to ensure it fits handlebars of any thickness, and even claims to fit the thick Aero bars.
Designed for battery longevity
This headlight has a smart charge feature, which keeps the battery from overcharging by automatically cutting off the charge when the battery is full.
CONS
Mounting can be tricky
The rubber mounts are basically straps that hook around the handlebar and hold the headlight in place like a band would. This allows the light to slide forward or backward, especially on bumpy roads. Sometimes, the rubber mount can break, but you can get replacements from their website.
